About Us

How it all began

Founded in 1978 by the directors of Hotchkiss Ductwork, Plant Movements was borne out of the requirement to safely move air handling plant on the major projects Hotchkiss were involved with.

Starting from humble beginnings, the company soon established itself as being a pioneer for solutions not only for the air handling market but the entire construction sector. The company grew over the next years in both structure and experience, establishing itself as the leading exponent in the field of plant handling.

In 2002 the company was subject to a management buy-out from the parent company, Hotchkiss. As an independent company Plant Movements continued to grow, adding both experienced operatives to the team and a fleet of specialist vehicles to complement the whole end-to-end project management structure.

Management Buy-Out

A planned and phased transition in the ownership of Plant Movements has taken place with the retirement of Managing Director, Peter Walter.  Peter’s shares in the business were acquired by his co-director, John Miller, in early 2011 but he continued to work in the business on a part-time basis until the end of March 2012 to ensure an orderly handover.

The two men led the management buy-out of the company from the then parent Hotchkiss Group in 2002, since when it has grown to become one of the country’s leading specialists in the movement and handling of all types of heavy plant and equipment. John, who has taken over as MD, paid tribute to his colleague saying “Peter has played a massive part in helping to establish Plant Movements as a leading player in our field, both regionally and nationally. He leaves the business in a much stronger position than when he originally joined it in 1994 and there are many client companies that have reason to be grateful for his determination to find a solution to almost any problem involving the movement or handling of heavy and bulky items of plant.” Peter’s sale and John’s purchase of his shares was brokered by Nik Askaroff, CeO of EMC Management Consultants Ltd who has been a long-standing adviser to both John and Peter since he masterminded their MBO back in 2002.
