Logistics Package Delivers at the Shard

The Shard is London’s most dynamic single building and the focal point of a massive redevelopment taking place in the London Bridge area. The tallest building in Western Europe, The Shard has transformed the London skyline with a mixed-use 310 m (1,016 ft) vertical city of high quality offices, leading-name restaurants, the 5-star Shangri-La Hotel, exclusive residential apartments and the capital’s highest public viewing gallery offering 360 degree views. It’s been a massive project requiring careful planning and co-ordination and Plant Movements has played an important part in making sure things have and continue to run smoothly.

Having won a three-way pitch to handle the site logistics, we worked with the principal contractors, Mace, and a consortium of mechanical and electrical contractors to plan, manage and execute the delivery, offloading and positioning of all heavy-duty materials and plant on a daily basis.

This has involved a crew of four of our people being based virtually permanently on site with another eight or ten joining them from time-to-time. Many of the same people are now working on the adjoining development, The Place, which will provide 40,000 sq m (428,000 sq ft) of office space in a prestigious 17-storey building of great architectural distinction. The building also has direct access to London Bridge Quarter’s new piazza and unrivalled connections at London Bridge Station.

Being located in a particularly congested part of the capital, the London Bridge Quarter contracts have not been without their challenges, not least the need to carry out a number of lifts over the public areas of London Bridge Station.

We have also made full use of our side-entry system which allows items of plant to be craned in through the side of a building without the use of costly and time-consuming platforms. This has saved the contractors both time and money.

Not since we finished work on the Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherds Bush have we had to manage and provide such a comprehensive full site logistical package. But the experience and expertise of our on-site team, together with the support of the relevant Project Managers at Head Office, have enabled us to deliver a first class service fully appreciated by all concerned.
